The Lenovo S920 smartphone has a 3,000 mAh battery

The acquisition of Motorola, which had operating losses of more US$1 billion last year according to data compiled by Bloomberg, adds new risks and challenges to Lenovo as the company seeks to integrate the deal and revive sales, Yang said.

The Company’s gross profit for the third fiscal quarter increased 15 percent year-over-year to US$1.36 billion, with gross margin at 12.6 percent. Operating profit for the quarter grew 37 percent year-over-year to US$334 million. Basic earnings per share for the third fiscal quarter was 2.56 US cents, or 19.85 HK cents. Net cash reserves as of December 31, 2013 totaled US$3.4 billion.

The Lenovo S920 smartphone has a 3,000 mAh battery, which the company claims delivers the talk time of up to 33 hours and a standby time of up to 27 days.Under a strategy it calls “PC Plus,” Lenovo agreed last month to buy Motorola, a maker of mobile handsets, from Google. That deal followed shortly on an announcement that Lenovo planned to acquire the low-end server business of IBM.

P780 has all the Lenovo attributes—well built, simple and not shimmery. The display covers the major part on the front outlined by the bezel, while the rear cover is mix of solid metallic finish. Overall, the look of P780 has nothing to talk about or nothing to complain. The HD display is of standard quality being used by brands these days in the R18,000 pricing slab without the glaring omission of a Corning Glass material, which is a big miss. The raw performance of P780 is more matched with the Canvas HD, Xolo Q Series and other mid-segment devices but the only stand out point for Lenovo is the 4000 mAh battery, a size which is more recognised with tablets than smartphones.

The camera does a decent job in daylight conditions with slight time lag between clicking and processing the image. The low light capability is average with evident grain and noise in the images. The front VGA camera does an okay

The two deals, together valued at more than $5 billion, prompted concerns among some investors that Lenovo was moving too aggressively in its quest to move beyond PCs and to push into the smartphone business in the United States. Both Motorola and the IBM business that Lenovo agreed to acquire lose money, but the company says it is confident that it can turn them around.

Lenovo said it sold 17.3 million smartphones and tablets in the quarter, compared with 15.3 million PCs. The company’s Internet and digital home division, which includes lenovo s650 smartphones, tablets and smart televisions, accounted for 16 percent of revenue, up from 11 percent a year earlier.

“They basically are taking on a material headwind to profitability which will impact their results,” said Alberto Moel, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in Hong Kong. “For the next few quarters we will be seeing earnings coming down. The question is how bad those earnings will drop and how low they will go before they start rising again.”
